Incumbents Fill the Slate In 2011 Local Elections

Only the races for spots on the board of two local school districts will be contested.

When voters go to the polls this April, they may experience déjà vu. Only a handful of new candidates are running for local office, and in most cases, races are uncontested for such offices as village trustee, park district commissioner and school board member. On the village board, three seats are up for grabs, including the spots of longtime trustees James Karagianis and A.C. Buehler III, both of whom will run for re-election this year. Since trustee Kati Spaniak has decided not to run again, her seat is open, but only one candidate filed by the Dec. 20 deadline: civil engineer Robert Israel, who is also a member of Northbrook's stormwater management commission. GBN Fails Standards for Students With Disabilities

For second straight year, school did not meet performance goals for group under the No Child Left Behind Act.

If you use this year's state report cards as a measure of success, Glenbrook North is an academic standout among schools in Illinois—and it's also not making the grade. For the second consecutive year, students with disabilities (those who have a disability that qualifies them for special education services) did not make adequate yearly progress (AYP) on math and reading tests, and the state has identified Glenbrook North as a school needing improvement according to the federal  No Child Left Behind Act. As a whole, the 2010 state report card, which was released this week, shows that GBN is head and shoulders above most Illinois schools when it comes to such measures as graduation rate and ACT scores.
