Lt. Governor Names Morrison, Drury to Gun Panel

New state senator, representative will serve with on Lt. Gov. Simon’s Firearms Working Group. Morrison also named to five committees.

State Sen. Julie Morrison (D-Deerfield) and state Rep. Scott Drury (D-Highwood) were named to Lt. Gov. Sheila Simon’s Firearms Working Group this week to help the state craft responsible gun policy. Drury and Morrison will work with other freshmen members of the Illinois General Assembly of both parties. They will meet with stakeholders like the Illinois Rifle Association, the Brady PAC, the Illinois Council Against Handgun Violence, mental health professionals, gun manufacturers and crime victims. “When it comes to this issue, the legislature has no time to lose, Morrison said in a news release. “I hope that we can reach a consensus that allows for responsible gun ownership with commonsense safety measures. Morrison Takes Senate Seat Wednesday

Julie Morrison (D-Deerfield) took her seat in the 98th Illinois General Assembly today after being sworn into office fully aware of the seriousness of the job facing her yet honored to be part of the process. “The gravity of the fiscal uncertainty I will be facing is tempering the excitement I feel,” Morrison said Tuesday on her way to Springfield. Morrison Defeats Friedman in Il 29th State Senate Race

Democrat Julie Morrison has won the race against Republican Arie Friedman with nearly 53 percent of the votes

After accurately predicting 2004 and 2008 Presidential races, the cookie count is too close to call.

(Update at 6:40 p.m.) When Deerfields Bakery closed for the day at 5 p.m. today the number of cookies sold with the likenesses of President Barack Obama and Republican Challenger Mitt Romney was so close the Deerfield institution has issued a recount. “It was so close we’ve issued a recount,” Jacki Schmitt, one of the company’s owners, said. “You’ll have to check our website tomorrow.” One difference between the cookie election and the actual contest is voting more than once is allowed. “We encourage it,” Schmitt said. State Senate Candidates Campaign in Deerfield

Deerfield was a hub of activity Wednesday for the two candidates who hope to succeed retiring state Sen. Susan Garrett (D-Lake Forest). Both the Republican candidate, Highland Park pediatrician Arie Friedman, and his Democratic opponent, West Deerfield Township Supervisor Julie Morrison, were in the Village. Earlier: Morrison, Friedman Intensify Attacks Morrison did herself some concrete good. She voted. When asked who she voted for, she answered with a smile. She does like the idea of early voting and hopes to see it expanded. “I’ll be very busy election day talking to voters so I decided to vote today,” Morrison said. “Early voting is a great idea. West Deerfield Township Supervisor Julie Morrison was endorsed Wednesday by former Rep. John Porter (R-Wilmette) while Highland Park pediatrician Arie Friedman got the backing of Sen. Mark Kirk (R-Highland Park) in their race to succeed retiring state Sen. Susan Garrett (D-Lake Forest). Porter represented the 10th Congressional District from 1980 until he retired in 2000 when he was succeeded by Kirk, who held the post until he was elected to the United States Senate in 2010. Sparks Fly During 58th District State Rep. Debate

Democratic candidate Scott Drury and Republican candidate Mark Shaw traded charges of dishonest campaigning and offensive attacks during a Patch-sponsored debate on Sunday.

The candidates for 58th District State Representative exchanged verbal barbs with one another about their campaigns, positions and integrity during a debate Sunday in Lake Forest. Republican candidate Mark Shaw frequently said that Democratic candidate Scott Drury "has been bought and paid for by Mike Madigan," the Illinois House Speaker. "He's received tens of thousands of dollars to be elected by Mr. Madigan," Shaw, a criminal defense attorney, said in a forum sponsored by the League of Women Voters, Patch and the Union League Club of Chicago.
