Kyle Caraher Inspires Playground Fundraiser

Caraher was a Glenbrook North senior when he past away last summer. His family and St. Norbert's are raising money in his name to build a new playground at St. Norbert's School.

Friends of Northbrook's Caraher family are raising money for a new playground at St. Norbert School in memory of Kyle Caraher, the 17-year-old Glenbrook North football player who passed away a year ago in a car accident.  An online fundraiser called Kyle's Dreaming Tree is set up with the goal of collecting $30,000 over the next two months to help build a playground on the grounds of the grade school and junior high that Caraher attended. Sign up for the Northbrook Patch morning newsletter to get the latest community updates in your email. "...while this is a private school, the playground will always be open to everyone in the community," the Dreaming Tree site reads. "It is Kyle’s parent’s dream that his Dreaming Tree be a place where …

Spartans Rush Past Titans in Rival Win

Glenbrook North beat Glenbrook South for the first time in eight years at Friday night's varsity football game.

Grant Rushing's 16 yard run with 44.7 seconds remaining gave Glenbrook North football the 21-14 lead over Glenbrook South to earn the Spartans their first victory against rival Titans in eight years, the Northbrook Star reports.  GBS (1-2) quarterback Max Cohen connected a 41-yard pass with Brett Laurie for the game's first touchdown, but GBN (2-1) tied the game on the next drive with a 67-yard pass to Nick Cox. A second touchdown gave the Spartans a 14-7 lead before halftime. With 7:02 remaining in the game, Titans' QB threw a 43-yard touchdown pass to Cody Carroll for the game's second tie, until Rushing's game winning run. This is the Spartans' second victory in three games, on the heels of their home opener win last week against Lane …

Tragedy Inspires Compassion in Northbrook

Glenbrook North and friends of the Garrity family are working together to honor the young men who passed away this summer.

An online fundraising website has already collected more than $5000 for the William "Billy" Garrity Scholarship Fund, just two weeks after friends of the Garrity family came up with the idea and launched the site.  “We were trying to think of ways to help out with the Garrity family and all that’s happened in the last couple weeks in Northbrook, so I created this page to raise money for the scholarship fund that they’re starting up at Glenbrook North," said Daniel Malter, 21, a Glenbrook North alumnus and friend of the Garrity family who created the online fundraiser. “We didn’t want to do something too extreme so that the family might feel uncomfortable, so we thought this would be the perfect way to help them.” William "Billy" Garrity, a…

Northbrook, Glenview Residents Discuss Grief and Suicide at Community Meeting

According to Northbrook Village President, "Northbrook can and will recover" from the recent tragedies.

There were no outbursts, no shocking revelations about the recent tragedies in Glenview and Northbrook. On Wednesday night, hundreds of people filled Glenbrook North's Sheely Center to quietly reflect on the past and hear expert advice on grief management, the statistical realities of suicides in Illinois and how to communicate with loved ones during periods of emotional hardship. They gathered in the wake of a string of recent tragedies, including two suicides of young men in Northbrook, the death in a car accident of a Glenbrook North student, the train derailment and bridge collapse that killed a Glenview couple, the drowing death of a 4-year-old Glenview boy, and the sudden death from an illness of a GBN special education teacher. The …

Northbrook's Tight Grip

Sudden losses center a community, reveal ties.

Hurt.   It is a theme that has paraded itself around our town recently, as family and friends grieved the loss of loved ones. And all people could ask is, “why?” Of course, there is not one simple answer or reason. Why should our brother, sister, neighbor, friend, grandchild, be snatched away without warning? There is no consolation for that. And frankly, I’m in no position to speak about it. What do I know about the topic? An 18-year-old writer, witnessing the tragedies around her in complete awe. At first, I shied away from the topic--it was one that I didn’t want to touch upon because I didn’t know how. This doesn’t happen. Well, this doesn’t happen here. But the more I thought about this article, the more there was one aspect I could …

Car Crash Kills Glenbrook North Student

Kyle Caraher was an honor roll student and football player.

A 17-year-old Glenbrook North High School senior died after his car collided with an SUV Monday afternoon.  Kyle Caraher was driving to his friend's house in Wisconsin where his family was vacationing at about 1 p.m. when the crash occurred, the Columbia County Sheriff's Department stated in a press release. The teen was pronounced dead at the scene. Wisconsin police say Caraher's car was traveling north on a country road and failed to stop at a stop sign. His vehicle was hit by an SUV travelling east at the intersection.  The SUV driver suffered minor injuries. The sheriff's department said speed is not believed to be a factor in the crash. “We are devastated beyond words," Glenbrook North Principal Paul Pryma said. "Kyle was a strong, …
