Cook County Sheriff Thomas J. Dart is warning residents not to be fooled by scams where “winners” are told they are entitled to a large lottery cash prize without ever having purchased a ticket. Scammers are reaching their victims, who are often senior citizens, via telephone calls, faxes, emails and letters to tell them about their “jackpot.” Some of these letters include phony seals and certificates. To collect, however, money needs to be sent either via Western Union or cashier’s check to a foreign address to pay for additional taxes and/or handling charges. By now, you likely know the winning Powerball tickets from Wednesday's $550 million drawing were sold in Arizona and Missouri. Those winning tickets mactched all five of the five numbers and the Powerball number. Each winner will receive about $293.7 million. However, right here in Illinois, two ticket holders matched all five numbers as well (not the Powerball number) and will receive $1 million each. Those tickets were sold at Casey's General Store in Fairmont, Ill., and Barts Supermarket in Flanagan, Ill., according to the Illinois Lottery results page. A Highland Park gas station sold a winning Little Lotto ticket Monday, which means someone in the area could be $475,000 richer. The winner, who has yet to come forward, matched all five numbers – 20, 24, 25, 31 and 32 – and purchased the ticket at a the Shell gas station at 10 Skokie Valley Road. The gas station will receive a $4,750 bonus, one percent of the jackpot amount, for selling a winning ticket.
