Where Would You Put A Dog Park in Northbrook?

Patch wants to know what you think.

When we published a story about a recent spike in complaints over dogs running off leash, we got lots of feedback from readers. Discussion ranged from coyotes to picking up pet waste to how dogs should be trained. But one theme was clear: many commenters believe that Northbrook needs a dog park, where pet owners could let their dogs run around safely (and legally) off leash. "We really do need to somehow create a fenced area for dogs and their owners where the dogs can be exercised and can socialize," wrote Colleen Holohan. "I know I can speak for hundreds of dog owners in our town. We're waiting patiently for our village leaders to respond." Park District Plans Winter Carnival

Free event is scheduled for Jan. 14.

The Northbrook Park District hopes residents will come out to beat the winter blues with a chili cook-off, ice skating and dog sledding demonstration in Meadowhill Park. Scheduled for 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 13, the annual Winter Carnival offers activities for all ages. For a $15 entry fee, local cooks can compete for the honor of best chili in the village. Kids and families can enter a sled decorating contest for free to compete for prizes for best theme, best recycled entry and best team effort.   Other activities include a snowboarding demonstration, snowshoe obstacle course, family games, a bonfire with free s'mores and live music. PHOTOS: Costumed Cuties At Northbrook's Autumnfest

Park District hosts free family event to welcome in the new season.

A cast of costume kids came dressed as a police officer, Scooby Doo, a baby cow, a kitten and Michael Jackson, among other characters, for the Northbrook Park District's Autumnfest celebration. The seasonal event, held in Meadowhill Park, is a free community festival now in its third year. Guests enjoyed live music provided by local band Out of Control, the Park Larks senior choir and the Axidents, who won this year's Rock the Green battle of the bands. Other offerings included a pie contest, all-ages costume contest, games, inflatables, free hot cider provided by Sunset Foods, and an arts and craft show. Never mind the early sunsets and frosty mornings: there are many ways to enjoy this special time of year.

Sure, summer is fun, what with the pools, picnics and days in the yard. But fall has just as much to offer. Fewer bugs, trees turning color, cooler breezes and delicious treats are just a few reasons to celebrate the changing season.
