In Glenbrook North athletics, wrestler Andrew Maksimovic earns a trip to state and girls basketball team closes out regular season.
BOYS BASKETBALL - As if inconsistent play on the court wasn't frustrating enough, Glenbrook North is now dealing with injuries and the flu. After winning 54-45 at Maine West on Friday, Glenbrook North lost at Conant in overtime on Saturday. The win over Maine West keeps the Spartans tied for first in the Central Suburban League North at 7-2, but they were shorthanded in the 48-45 loss to the Cougars. Tommy Hanrahan and Ethan Schmidt didn't play while Andrew McAuliffe, who scored 18 points at Conant, Peter Szostak and Jordan Liss are playing at less than full health. The Spartans (16-7) have a couple weeks before the playoffs to recover. On the topic of playoffs, the seedings were announced this week. GBN earned the five seed in the New …

Playoffs are starting in the winter sports. See how GBN's teams are doing.
BOYS BASKETBALL - The inconsistent play of the Spartans continued last week. GBN snapped a three-game losing streak on Friday with a 53-35 win over Highland Park. Tommy Hanrahan made five three-pointers to score 17 points and Peter Szostak scored seven points in the first quarter to help the Spartans jump out to a 22-5 lead. Then, on Saturday Warren came to Northbrook and showed why they are a highly ranked team in the area. The Blue Devils won 54-49 to hand GBN its second home loss of the season. With only two weeks left in the regular season, the conference race remains tight. GBN (15-6) and Niles North both sit at 6-2 in the Centraul Suburban League North. The Spartans have a pair of road games coming up, at Maine West Friday and at …

GBN posted a 122.225 and didn't automatically qualify any gymnasts for sectionals.
The Niles North Regional was the Citlali Cuevas show. The Vikings’ senior won the all-around and three events, finishing second on the uneven bars, and led the host school to win the team competition. Behind Cuevas, the Vikings scored a school-record 137.2 to get the first regional championship in Niles North history. Meanwhile, Glenbrook North finished fourth out of four teams with a 122.225 and had to rely on at-large spots to qualify individuals into sectionals. Conant was second with a 130.8 and Elk Grove edged the Spartans with a 122.325. GBN scored higher earlier in the year, making it a somewhat disappointing meet. “Six falls on beam, that kind of killed us,” GBN coach Julie Holmbeck said. “We would have been 125 right there. It’s a…

Wrestling conference results, Blackhawk Cup bracket.
BOYS BASKETBALL - Glenbrook North fell from the roster of unbeaten Central Suburban League North teams Friday night. Niles North beat the Spartans for the first time since 1998, 48-44. The Spartans led by nine at halftime, but Niles North made a 9-0 run to start the half and gained momentum. Peter Szostak had a team-high 10 points. At 5-1 in conference, GBN (15-3) still holds a one-game lead over Niles North. They have to wait a week to get back in the win column; Deerfield comes to Northbrook on Friday. GIRLS BASKETBALL - It was a tough week for the GBN girls. The team lost to Niles North 61-34 on Friday and followed with a 56-50 loss to Regina on Saturday. Sammie Von Reuder had 10 points to lead the Spartans on Friday. GBN (5-18, 2-5) …

Inexperienced GBN girls gymnastics team falls to senior-heavy Deerfield squad.
On senior night in Deerfield, it was clear that the Glenbrook North girls gymnastics team was lacking what Deerfield had--seniors. The Spartans graduated four gymnasts from last year's conference championship team and now have a varsity roster that includes two sophomores and two freshman. The Warriors lineup included four seniors, all of whom contributed to a 132.9-120.1 win over Glenbrook North. "We are a young team and that's a big part of it," GBN head coach Julie Holmbeck said. "They do struggle with the fact that we only have one varsity member that's a senior. And there's not a lot of leadership roles in the gym besides her." The Spartans have lost two consecutive conference dual meets and were also disappointed with their …

Despite season-high score, Spartans lose 135.800-124.35.
Little by little the Glenbrook North girls gymnastics team is improving. In a 135.800-124.35 loss to Niles North on senior night Thursday, the Spartans continued the trend of improving by one point every dual meet. “We had one girl out, Jane Nellis, and we still went up a point,” GBN coach Julie Holmbeck said. “We went from 123 to 124. It seems like we’ve been doing that every dual meet.” The young Spartans knew going in that they wouldn’t be contending for their fifth straight conference title, but the continued improvement means another season-high score. Sophomore Miriam Mikhelson led the way with a 32.00 all-around score including an 8.95 on the floor. Sophomore Valerie Bobart scored a 30.90 all-around with a team-best 8.25 on the …

Girls gymnastics picks up conference win; basketball teams prepare for holiday tournaments.
Boys basketball: The hoops squad remained undefeated with a 40-27 conference win at Highland Park. Peter Szostak had 13 points and 10 rebounds. Once again, the Spartans' size advantage was a big reason behind their success. GBN (8-0, 3-0) has a week off before competing in the loaded Proviso West Holiday Tournament. The boys will face Morton in the first round. Among the 16-team field, GBN is one of seven teams in the top 20 of both the Chicago Tribune and Chicago Sun-Times rankings. Girls basketball: The tough season continued for the girls with a 55-30 loss Friday night to Highland Park. Junior guard Nora O'Neill led the team with 12 and Rachel Blitt had 10. The girls are 1-11 on the year. Inexperience and injuries have made it an …

A look back at the last week in Glenbrook North athletics.
GIRLS TENNIS - The Spartans finished fourth in the state tournament this weekend headed by Hanna Yu's third place showing in the singles draw. Yu lost to Jasmine Minor of Carmel 6-1, 2-6, 4-6 in the semifinal before bouncing back in the third place match. The doubles team of sophomores Anna Zelechonok and Katrine Zhadovich made it to the quarterfinals before bowing out to Mari Georgiadis and Emily Barretta of New Trier 6-1, 3-6, 4-6. Miriam Mikhelson and Lisa Silshtut made it to the third round in doubles. The team's fourth place finish tops last year, when they finished seventh. FOOTBALL - After defeating Deerfield 26-20 to finish the regular season 8-1 and 5-0 in conference, GBN drew Harlem from Machesney Park in the first round of the …
