Northbrook Resident Asks Village Officials to Review Contractor Policy

Bonnie Spangler raised concerns to village trustees about 'contractors treating people like they don't count,' at Tuesday's board meeting.

Bonnie Spangler, from the 3400 block of Prestwick Ln., addressed the Northbrook Board of Trustees at Village Hall during their regular meeting Tuesday night, raising questions about the village's policy toward home contractors.  "I'm here to help my friends and neighbors in Northbrook from suffering through what I have endured over the past several years by having the misfortune of living between construction on both sides of my house," Spangler said. To the west of Spangler's home, she said a ranch-style house was demolished and replaced by a mansion. To the east, a "super size" colonial is being constructed. Spranger presented an open letter with the following concerns: Spangler's friend and neighbor, Pauline Shoback, also addressed the …

Sandy Frum to Seek Re-Election

Northbrook's current Village President will pursue a second term in the upcoming municipal elections.

With five Village Board terms expiring in April, at least four incumbents plan to seek re-election if slated by the Northbrook Caucus. Village President Sandy Frum, Village Clerk Deborah Ford, along with Board Trustees Todd Heller and Kathryn Ciesla have confirmed plans to seek another term at Village Hall. “I plan to see reelection so that I am able to continue my service to the residents and businesses of Northbrook,” Frum wrote in an email. Trustee Michael Scolaro, whose term is also expiring, is still on the fence about the April election.  "I've been in deliberations on this issue for the better part of the last month or so," Scolaro said. "I'm just trying to make sure I have enough time to commit to the effort." The Northbrook Caucus…

Northbrook Offers a Few Spots for Heat Relief

Keep tabs on friends, the elderly; watch for signs of heat-related illness.

The dog days of summer may have arrived a bit ahead of schedule, but the same rules about keeping safe and being smart outside still apply. For those who might not have the tried-and-true beater of the heat - air-conditioning - here are a few places where people can cool off during much of the day: If you're going outside, be particularly safe as Accuweather.com is predicting temperatures early this week in the 90s, with a heat index that could top 100 degrees. Keep well-hydrated - even if you are inside - by drinking plenty of water, sports drinks or other sources of electrolytes. Avoid caffeine and alcohol as these will promote dehydration. According to Mayoclinic.com, signs of dehydration include having a dry and sticky mouth, thirst, …

Chicken Debate Comes Home to Roost in Northbrook

Community members pressure village to reconsider its chicken ordinance; opponents worry about property values.

If chickens cross the road into Northbrook, so to speak, it won’t be without opposition. At a meeting held Tuesday night to discuss village regulations on keeping chickens, residents clashed over whether the animals belonged in barnyards or backyards. Currently, village ordinance prohibits residents from raising chickens on lots smaller than two acres—meaning the vast majority of people cannot do so.  “I would hope that Northbrook would take a fresh new look at this,” said resident Christine Buti. “You can keep a few chickens without neighbors even knowing.”  Related: Backyard Chickens Ruffle Feathers in Northbrook Fellow resident George Stutz disagreed.  “I do not like the notion of having chickens in my neighbor’s backyard when I’m …

My neighbor had chickens. I'm thinking those were the removed chickens mentioned above. They also had a rooster which crowed in the morning. It was kind of cool to hear it, but I live by the bike path and I too, would be worried about the coyotes coming into the neighborhood to get to them.   more ›
