BOYS SOCCER: Simon Leads Spartans to Second Straight Win

Michael Simon had a goal and an assist in Glenbrook North's shutout win at Rolling Meadows.

Glenbrook North has an inexperienced team this year, but they still have Michael Simon. Simon scored a goal and assisted another in the Spartans’ 2-0 win at Rolling Meadows Tuesday. The senior left winger, in his third-year on varsity, is one of the most experienced and talented players on a team that lost 12 seniors from last year’s conference winning squad. His role on the field is the same, but Simon has noticed a change off the field as one of the team’s captains. “I’m taking on a bigger leadership role,” Simon said. “Last year I wasn’t a captain, first year captain now. I’m trying to get everyone to bring their A game everyday.” According to Simon and coach Paul Vignocchi, the Spartans didn’t have their A game for much of the match …

Glenbrook North Soccer Goes Down To Prospect In Season Opener

Few scoring chances for home side Spartans.

Glenbrook North got off to a shaky start in its 2011 boys soccer season as the team lost 2-0 to Prospect Monday night. The visiting Knights, who boast 14 seniors on their 20-man roster, wasted no time in getting their season off to a flying start underneath the lights at the Glenbrook North football stadium. With only two minutes off the clock, senior Ihor Lehkiv slotted a beautiful pass to classmate Alex Schnepf, who held off Glenbrook North defender Marco Luke before rifling past Spartan goalkeeper Mitch Shapiro to give the visitors their early advantage. "It's definitely not the way we wanted to start the game or the season," said Spartan head coach Paul Vignocchi. Even with Schnepf's early goal, the game, for the most part, was bereft …

Girls Soccer: Spartans Can't Get by Lake Forest

Glenbrook North fell 1-0 to the Scouts in a sectional semifinal.

The unfortunate part about playoff soccer is that one moment can end a season so abruptly. Glenbrook North made one mistake against Lake Forest in the sectional semifinal at Glenbrook South and that was all it took. The Spartans couldn’t recover from an early goal and fell to the Scouts 1-0 on Tuesday. GBN topped the school record for wins, set last year, with 19, and won the program’s second regional title. Despite accomplishing all that, the team was still emotional after the loss. “We’re really close as a team and so doing this is pretty hard the way we ended,” senior Stephanie Murthey said. “Just getting this far in the season is great. I’m just happy we set the school record for 19 wins, but I don’t want it to be over yet.” No. 2 seed…

Spartans Sprint Past Rival Titans

Glenbrook North soccer team pounces 3-0 on crosstown South in run-up to playoffs.

Rivalry games are known for their intensity and Glenbrook North (GBN) sure brought that against Glenbrook South on Tuesday night. The Spartans jumped out early and kept attacking in a fantastic first half against the rival Titans for a 3-0 win. GBN's impressive team speed had the Titans on their back heels from the start and resulted in three first half goals. "Attacking the ball and putting the ball on goal--I thought this was our best game of the year," Spartan coach Paul Vignocchi said. Michael Simon's goal in the eighth minute was just the start. Simon intercepted a back pass aimed for Glenbrook South (GBS) goalkeeper David Abiera and flicked it over Abiera for the early lead. GBS had some chances to equalize the score, but they didn't…
