A son's annual check-up gets his mother wondering what happens between raising the first child and the last.
The other day, my son kicked me out of his doctor’s appointment. Somewhere around the age of acne explosions, smelly feet and hair product, pediatric annual check-ups include an option for a parent-free zone to promote a personal discussion with a health care professional. This is a great idea, and I think adolescents should take full advantage of this opportunity. Correction: this is a great idea, and I think other people’s kids should take full advantage of it. My kids? They have nothing to hide. As a seasoned parent when it comes to these "special" visits, I was well prepared. This was my third child, after all. I like to think of myself as a fairly liberal, tolerant and accepting person, who prides herself in keeping communication …

All week Patch was on the search for Northbrook's best. And thanks to you, we received dozens of suggestions, photos and comments in return. A teenage night on the town got rowdy Saturday when one boy exposed himself and another pulled out a BB gun, according to police. A 15-year-old Northbrook boy who was with a group of friends allegedly pulled down his pants and exposed himself to a teen girl, police reported. The group then moved from the Metra station, where the incident happened, to My Pie, according to an employee. At the pizza parlor, a 15-year-old Buffalo Grove boy then pulled out a BB gun and shot another teen in the leg, according to police. The BB gun came from the backpack of a third 15-year-old, from Chicago. When police arrived to My Pie, there were up to 16 teens there, according to the employee. Sometimes you get a craving for one type of food, and it almost doesn't matter where you get it. The Feed takes a look at local restaurants that all serve a single food in common with one another. This week The Feed takes a closer look at pizza in Northbrook. Jake's Pizza Operating since 1961, this pizza place is the matter of some debate on the internet. Some commenters refer to it as a "working man's paradise," for the low prices, while others express outright anger at what they consider to be a sub par pie. Despite the flame wars, Northbrook residents do seem to agree that the specials here are hard to beat.
