Northbrook Park District Performs Controlled Fire at Techny Prairie

If you saw or smelled smoke coming from Techny Fields this afternoon, it was a controlled burn performed by the park district to protect the prairie soil and vegetation.

The Northbrook Park District started a fire at Techny Fields on Wednesday. They kept it under control.  According to Michael Brouillard, grounds manager at the park district, the blaze was contained to a prairie smaller than five acres.  "It helps keep the prairie in good condition," Brouillard said. "It controls non-native plants coming in and nourishes microorganisms that help prairie grass and wildflowers." This is the second burn the park district performed since 2008, and Brouillard says conditions were perfect because the usually wet ground has been dry because of the weather.  The Northbrook Fire Department was notified of the fire ahead of time, but firefighters were not present during the operation. Brouillard said the burn went …

Northbrook Residents Want More Information About Possible Community Center

The Northbrook Park District surveyed community members about a possible new community center near Techny Prairie Park and Fields.

More than nine months after Northbrook bought the six-acre parcel of land adjacent to Techny Prairie Park and Fields, community residents are still unsure of how they want the space used. After conducting a series of forums to guage people's opinions about building a new community center in that space, Northbrook Park District officials found that residents want more information about the possible construction, the Chicago Tribune reports.  According to the research, which is available on the park district website, three forums and eight focus groups were used to measure public opinion, with more than 100 community members, school district officials, the chamber of commerce and North Suburban YMCA offering their thoughts. And it seems …

Glenview has had a wonderful fitness facility for years and many Northbrook residents pay twice the fare as Glenview members to join. Buffalo Grove just opened up a beautiful fitness center. It is about time Northbrook does the same for its own residents.   more ›

Red-winged Blackbirds Dive-Bombing Area Residents

It feels like a scene from a Hitchcock movie, but the startling attacks on walkers, joggers and bikers are just part of birds' normal mating cycle, says animal control.

They swoop down out of the sky to attack their unwitting Northbrook victims. If you've braved the danger zone along a stretch of Anets Drive near the northern parking lot at Techny Park and Prairie, you may have seen the startling attacks, reminiscent of scenes from a Hitchcock movie: A red-winged blackbird is dive-bombing passersby. Amy Miller, an employee of nearby Crate & Barrel, fell victim last week. “Luckily, I've heard of this so I was not as surprised when it swooped down and pecked me on the head,” she said. Miller said she was singled out by the bird while riding her bike to the Bluegill Shelter near the Anetsberger golf course, where she, her daughter and their friends were attending a picnic.  “I was surprised [the bird] …

Residents Question Cost, Necessity of Proposed Community Center

Park District hosts forum to gather community input on potential construction of new community center.

Northbrook residents gathered at a park district forum to discuss the possibility of a new community center had one major question. What’s the price tag? Following its acquisition of a six-acre property near Techny Prairie Park and Fields for $2.1 million, the park district surveyed residents on their interest in building a community center on the site. Of the 678 households that responded to the survey, some 42 percent said that they were “very supportive” of building a community center there, while 21 percent said they were somewhat supportive.  But the two-dozen residents who gathered at Wednesday night’s forum to discuss the survey results wondered how much such a community center would cost—and whether the money would come from tax …

YMCA Proposes Partnership With Park District, Not New Community Center

While the park district gauges community interest in a new community center, the North Suburban YMCA floats idea of partnership.

Last week, the Northbrook Park District announced the results of a survey indicating that residents favor construction of a community center on park district property. But North Suburban YMCA Executive Director and CEO Howard Schultz believes he has a better idea.  “We have offered the park district an opportunity to partner with the Y to help answer the needs that they’ve perceived,” he told Patch. “We’ve offered this before, we offer this now.”  Related: Former Anetsberger Property Eyed For New Community Center Schultz spoke to Patch after the park district released the results of a survey conducted springing February to gauge interest in building a community center on the former Anetsberger property adjacent to Techny Prairie Park and …

The Y is dedicated to building a strong, accepting community - who wouldn't want to leverage such a partnership? I believe it is selfish to not rally as a community and build on what already exists - isn't that what community is all about?   more ›

Former Anetsberger Property Eyed For New Community Center

Survey polled residents about desire for community center and potential location at former Anetsberger site.

One question remains after the park district acquired a six-acre property near Techny Prairie Park and Fields in August 2011. What will replace the former Anetsberger factory?  Based on the results of a park district survey released Thursday, it appears that a significant number of Northbrook residents would support the construction of a new community center at the site. “This has been and always will be a community-driven process,” said executive director Rick Hanetho.  This winter, the park district hired consultant Leisure Vision, which sent out questionnaires to a random sampling of 3,000 Northbrook households between January and February. Leisure Vision has conducted surveys for several park districts around the North Shore and …

Braving the Snow

National Weather Service reports that approximately 4 inches fell on Northbrook between Thursday night and Friday morning.

Despite frigid winds and grey skies, Michelle Brown and her two-year-old son, Owen, were out sledding at Techny Prairie Park and Fields Friday morning. Brown, who had spent the morning inside with her kids, said the excursion was a welcome break for her and her son. "He needs to get out!" she laughed. Snow began falling late on Thursday, and by Friday afternoon, roughly 4 inches blanketed Northbrook, according to the National Weather Service. Scattered snow showers were forecast into the afternoon, with a 50 percent chance of precipitation. Did you go sledding or make a snow angel today? Add a new picture to the image gallery above.

Northbrook Spruced Up With 81 Donated Trees

Donated trees and shrubs worth $15,727 from Harvard, IL-based nursery planted in eight parks and area locations.

Christmas Trees they’re not. But what might be called an early holiday gift from a nursery in Harvard, IL, recently made Northbrook Park District workers busier than Santa’s elves on Christmas Eve. It was 81 trees and 12 shrubs the village received, free, and they were planted at eight area locations. Chances are, one of them’s near you.  “We received two semis loaded with the trees and shrubs. It was a lot of work, but we had everything planted in the ground in four days and spent another four days detailing," said Michael Brouillard, park district grounds manager. "This generous donation allowed us to plant trees that were needed in the parks but were not in the current budget. We’re very pleased that we could improve the public spaces …
