That is what Riverwoods based Orphans of the Storm is making possible at Northbrook from noon to 7 p.m. through Feb. 18 at Northbrook Court. Spending On Valentine's Day Gifts Goes Up. What Will You Be Buying?

The average person will fork out $130.97 on Valentine's Day gifts, according to a national survey. That's up slightly from last year. How much do you plan to spend on your Valentine?

Love — and money — are in the air this time of year. Americans are expected to spend $18.6 billion on Valentine's Day gifts this year, according to the National Retail Federation, citing a survey by BIGinsight. That comes out to $130.97 per person, which is up from $126.03 last year.  Perhaps not surprisingly, men will outspend women, with an average of $175.61 each compared to $88.78, according to the survey. While most of that spending is going toward significant others, 20 percent of people plan to buy a Valentine's Day gift for their pet. Yet there's hope for those who place a premium on quality time together instead of gifts. According to a study by Discover Financial Services, a majority of couples prefer to spend time together than …

Simple ways to put the kids to work and still have a Romantic evening at home

No babysitter for Valentine’s Day this year? Don't worry about it! You can still have a fun and romantic evening at home, even with the kids. When our kids were young, we could never get a babysitter for Valentine’s Day. But we recovered by putting the kids to work. That’s right. Putting the kids to work. I asked my kids if they could help put together a romantic evening for Daddy and I. Even though they were 7 and 9 years old, they took it on as a challenge and were quite creative. Here's how it worked. 1. Decide whether you are going to cook a romantic meal or order in from one of your favorite restaurants. We enjoy cooking but if you don’t, treat yourself and get carry out. Fancy food, not a big mess to clean-up, and a much less …

Your True Love Stories

Readers shared their love stories with Patch.

Yesterday, we asked readers to let tell us their own love stories. And the tales they shared were beautiful and inspiring! In honor of Valentine's Day, here are some of our favorites:  She Was Number 3 -- of 22 Karen Alpert met her husband online--sort of. While looking for a match on JDate, she got an e-mail from another guy on the dating website, who asked her if she was interested in his friend, Greg. "I don’t know whether I was feeling super optimistic that morning or super desperate, but I actually responded," Karen writes. "I said, 'That sounds great. Not to sound shallow, but can you send a picture?'" The friend sent Alpert a picture, and she was instantly won over. He looked just like Brad Pitt. "I think my husband is the cutest …

Growing Up In Northbrook—Again

A Valentine to the Everyday

Today, like every day, each other means more than the two of us -- it’s the whole family.

Once upon a time, February 14th was all about the two of us.  Now, Valentine’s Day is a family holiday -- and I love it more than ever.  With two little girls, most days are filled with hearts and lots of pink. Today it’s over the top. From the time we first met, my husband has been thoughtful (or at least put on a really good act) about making Valentine’s Day the momentous day that I think it is.  Now that he’s outnumbered 3 to 1, he knows his ladies, especially the little ones, expect him to deliver.  Luckily the dollar bins at Target and bags of pink M&M’s make that all pretty easy. By no means does life stop on Valentine’s Day.  Most moms I know are busy with their usual attempts to balance work, kids, carpool, practices and school …
