Where Are the Best Places for Soup?

We’re asking readers to suggest great, local places to get delicious, hot soup.

It’s windy; it’s frigid. Winter awoke at last, and it is a good time to enjoy a bowl of hot soup. Calling on the knowledge of the estimable community on Des Plaines Patch’s Facebook page, we asked, who knows a good place for soup? Here, in no particular order, were some of the suggestions: Add your suggestion in the comment section below. Click on the green, “Upload Photos and Videos,” button above to share a picture of the soup you’re enjoying.

Best of Winner: Max and Benny's

Max and Benny's took three quarters of the vote in our poll on who makes the best hamantaschen in Northbrook.

In our inaugural Best of Patch poll, Max and Benny’s was the clear winner for best hamantaschen in Northbrook, taking more than three quarters of the vote to beat out Leonard's Bakery, Whole Foods and Sunset Foods. What makes the restaurant’s traditional Jewish cookies so good?    The answer is butter, says owner Lester Schlan.  “The secret to the success of the hamantaschen is the crust,” Schlan explains. “It’s a cookie crust.” Related: Best of Patch: Hamantaschen While many bakeries and delis cook the triangular pastry with oil, Max and Benny’s uses a similar recipe to the one used for its cookies. The restaurant, deli and bakery on Waukegan Road sells hamantaschen year-round but offers more flavors around the Jewish holiday Purim, when …

Patch Picks For Foodie Gifts

Send an edible gift your friends will appreciate.

Fruitcakes sound harmless enough — a cake filled with chopped nuts, fruits and spices, and sometimes alcohol — but holiday legend makes them out to be worse than liver and onions, root canals, or rain on your wedding day. Fortunately, there are plenty of fruitcake alternatives to choose from if you want to give food as a gift. For friends and colleagues, a package of sweets from a local bakery or some fragrant coffee beans are a great way to express your appreciation for a year's worth of good work, kindness and friendship. We've rounded up some local options if you're shopping for the foodies on your gift list. Carol's Cookies Highland Park-based Carol's Cookies are sure to please. Forget the butter for your mashed potatoes? We've got you covered.

Patch Picks For Healthy Families

Simple changes can improve your family's health as the holidays (and holiday eating) descend.

Sure, 'tis the season for pumpkin pies and peppermint sticks, but for that very reason, November is a great month to think about healthy eating. The national Parent Teacher Association (PTA) has designated November as Healthy Lifestyles month. Knowing that a healthy child can achieve and learn more, local PTAs nationwide are encouraging families to increase their physical activity, eat fresh fruits and vegetables, develop community oriented physical activity programs and promote lifelong healthy behaviors. As for adults, we all know the holidays are coming. Minimize their effect on your waistline by making some easy changes at home now. Shop smart "Limit the junk you have in the house," said Kim Seiden, a Northbrook nutrition consultant, …

The Bag Lady

Confessions from a reusable bag junkie.

I am a reusable bag junkie.  You say “BYOB,” and I bring my own bag. The store clerks ask, “paper or plastic?” I smugly reply, “neither.” You see me strut into the grocery store toting totes filled with totes. What you don’t see is my obsession. I didn’t just jump on the reusable-bag bandwagon – I leapt. My addiction began with a simple, unbleached organic cotton model. Sleek in style with sturdy handles. No logos, no patterns, no nonsense. I liked how it felt walking through the supermarket parking lot carrying my empty bags, knowing people were looking at me wishing they had thought to bring their own. But they weren’t green enough, together enough, hip enough… not like me. Then one day, only weeks after my original reusable bag purchase…

Blotter: "Huffing" Leads to DUI; Shoplifters Hit Willow Festival

The police report activity from Oct. 3 - 9, 2011.

The items below came from Northbrook Police Department reports. In all incidents where an arrest occurred, a charge is merely an accusation and not evidence of guilt. The arrested person is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. DUI and Warrant Arrest Ignacio Gonzalez Jr., 23, of Waukegan, was stopped for a traffic violation Sunday, Oct. 2, at Landwehr Road and Prestwick Lane and charged with driving under the influence of drugs, improper lane usage and possession of cannabis, according to police. His passenger, Timanthony Verner, 23, of Chicago, was also arrested after police determined that he was wanted on a DUI warrant out of Jackson County. Driving Under the Influence Dominique L. Whole Foods Raises Funds to Teach Better Nutrition

Donations from shoppers to help curb unhealthy eating habits among area residents.

Throughout December Whole Foods shoppers in Deerfield and Northbrook pitched in a little extra at the cashier for a good cause. This year’s recipient of Whole Foods' Bag Hunger Program was Nurture, a nonprofit that focuses on addressing issues like childhood obesity and wellness in low-income families. “Our mission is to empower members of all ages with the tools and resources needed to prepare healthy and delicious meals, even when faced with limited time and budget,” regional director Lisa Brewer said. In all, Whole Foods raised $8,520 for the organization. The money will now go toward Nurture’s programs, which includes cooking classes for families at various locations across the area. “All of our recipes cost somewhere between 30 cents …
