Ex-Northbrook Officer Pleads Guilty, Sentenced to 2 Year Probation

Enrique Guzman agreed to plead guilty to one count of official misconduct, in exchange for his guilty plea prosecutors dropped the theft charges, Chicago Tribune reported.

Former Northbrook police officer Enrique Guzman has been sentenced to two year probation after pleading guilty to official misconduct charges when he stole jewelry from a home while on duty, according to the Chicago Tribune.   In exchange for his guilty plea, prosecutors dropped burglary charges against Guzman, Chicago Tribune reported.  The sentence includes a $629.00 fine, he is prohibited from leaving the state and owning a firearm, according to court records. In late January, Guzman, 34, a 12-year veteran of the Northbrook Police Department, was charged with "felony offences of armed violence (armed while committing a crime), residential burglary, and official misconduct based upon knowingly committing those offenses while acting in …

$575 Worth of Alcohol Stolen in Northbrook Burglary

Featured in this week's blotter: four burglaries and one DUI.

The following reports were provided by the Northbrook Police Department. Arrests and charges are accusations and not proof of guilt. Burglary On May 11, someone entered a garage on the 2700 block of Greenwood Road and took about $575 worth of alcohol, according to police. The property owner reported the alcohol was in the garage in the morning, but the garage may have been left open for a brief period of time during the day, police say. On May 8, a resident on the 2000 block Illinois Rd. reported her house was burglarized, with various jewelry and electronics items stolen, according to police. On May 10, residents on the 3000 block White Pine Drive reported a ruse burglary after a man lured them to the backyard to talk about doing some …

Precautionary Lockdown at Meadowbrook After Students Report Suspicious Person

Meadowbrook students were released at the end of the day after a brief lockdown at the District 28 elementary school on Thursday.

Meadowbrook school was briefly locked down on Thursday after some students told staff they saw a man who may have been holding "an object that raised concerns" near the school, according to a district press release. "The police searched the area extensively and determined it was safe for the school to come out of lockdown and release students at the end of the school day," according to the release. Northbrook's Jennifer Weglarz, whose daughter attends the school, says she was in touch with Northbrook police after the incident.  "They don't know if it was a gun... a paintball gun or a garden tool or nothing," Weglarz said. 87-Year-Old Woman Charged With Retail Theft

A Glenview woman was charged with retail theft after taking about $35 worth of tiems from a business on Church Street.

The following reports were provided by the Northbrook Police Department. Arrests and charges are accusations and not proof of guilt. Retail Theft On April 30, Elaine Stein, 87, of Glenview, was charged with retail theft after attempted to take $35 worth of items from a business on the 1100 block of Church Street, according to police.  On April 28, a Macy’s employee was showing engagement rings to a male customer, when he ran out the store holding two rings worth a combined $7,639.00, according to police.  Drug Possession On May 2, Paul Kotelov, 48, of Highland Park, was charged with possession of cannabis after officers saw him smoking marijuana in a parking lot at Somme Woods, according to police.  Sign up for the Northbrook Patch …

Northbrook Burglary Map April 2013

Northbrook saw a spice in burglary reports last month over March, jumping from three to about 12.

Northbrook had about 12 burglary cases last month, ranging from a stolen whale gun to a safe containing $10,000.00. In March, Northbrook had about three burglary reports. Patch put together a map of crimes in March based on information from the Northbrook Police Department. Car Stolen Near Downtown Northbrook

Someone stole a 2008 Toyota Camry parked on Cherry Lane, a few blocks from downtown Northbrook.

The following reports were provided by the Northbrook Police Department. Arrests and charges are accusations, and not indications of guilt. Vehicular Burglary Police received a report on April 23 that someone cut the lock, entered a trailer and took two backpack blowers worth about $1,100.00 from a trailer on the 900 block of Willow Road. Attempted Residential Burglary On April 25, someone tried to enter a home on the 2300 block of Walters Avenue by pushing in the back door, but entry was not made, according to police.  Stolen Auto On April 25, someone stole a grey, 2008, four door Toyota Camry, according to police. Northbrook Police Track Down Stolen iPhones

After three vehicles had their windows smashed while parked in the Willow Festival parking lot, Northbrook police tracked the iPhones to a Chicago location.

The following reports were part of the Village of Northbrook weekly memo. On Saturday, April 13, at approximately 7:30 p.m., three vehicles parked in the Willow Fest parking lot had their windows smashed and computes, cell phones and cash removed. While investigating the incident, Officer Matt Johnson was able to track one of the cell phones via its “Find My iPhone” application. Sergeant Mike Metrick and Officer Johnson, along with assistance from the Chicago Police Department, were able to track the phone to a location in Chicago. Four subjects were eventually located, arrested and the stolen items were returned to their owners. Northbrook Police Issue Ruse Burglary Warning

In light of recent burglaries, the police department has issued advice on avoiding ruse burglaries.

Last week, a Northbrook resident reported their house was burglarized while they were distracted by someone posing as a phone company employee.  Since then, the Northbrook Police Department issued a warning to residents about ruse burglaries and how to avoid them.  What is a Ruse Burglary?  A Ruse Burglary is where a person will make contact with a homeowner and explain that they are with a utility company, the Village water department, a contractor working in the area or something similar and will ask the homeowner to accompany them to the basement or backyard to check on a safety related matter (gas leak, water pressure problem, etc). Once the homeowner accompanies the “worker” to the backyard or other area of the residence, a second …

Northbrook Collecting Unused and Expired Medicine

On Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., drop off your unused medicine at the Northbrook Police Department for safe disposal.

As part of the National Take Back Initiative, Northbrook police inviteresidents to safely dispose their unused or expired prescription drugs on Saturday, April 27, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the Northbrook Police Department, 1401 Landwehr Rd. Throughout the last four Take-Back events, the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) in conjunction with law enforcement partners, collected more than two million pounds of unwanted or expired medications for safe and proper disposal.  The Village continues to sponsor the “Save-A-Star” program by offering a collection box in the police department for that allows people safely dispose of unwanted and unused medications round the clock, all year. $900 Worth of Cadillac Hubcaps Stolen

Someone stole all the caps off six Cadillacs in Northbrook.

The following reports were provided by the Northbrook Police Department.  Theft On April 16, someone on the 100 block of Skokie Boulevard removed all the center hubcaps from six Cadillac Escalades, with each set of four worth about $150.00, according to police. Reported loss is about $900.00. On April 15, an employee on the 700 block of Skokie Boulevard reported an unknown man entered a cubicle area of the office while other employees were in different room for a meeting, according to police. The unknown man told a witness that was looking for a “Jason” and the witness told the man that there was no one named “Jason” employed there, according to the report. Employees later checked their cubicles for any missing items and two employees …
