ReplyEveryone who knows me would agree that yes, there is indeed a lot seriously wrong with me. Having a sense of humor, however, is not one of my flaws.

ReplyFour days ago, biking along the Green Bay Trail, just north of the Fort Sheridan train station, I saw the cougar. Passing another cyclist, we each confirmed the sighting. It's a little bit scary... and a tiny bit cool. We kept pedaling. Fast.

ReplyFor the record, I am officially giving up on the curbside composting BUT I am going to give backyard composting a try. I suspect that without the wait for weekly pick-up, and without the need to wash out the curbside container, I will become a convert. But as fodder for a little humor, the topic was ripe!

ReplySounds like the application might be making a rather broad sweep in the future. I'm receiving a lot of suggestions for additional questions, and the one I like best is this:
-Do any of these places sound familiar: Alcatraz, Joliet, or Riker's Island?
Keep suggestions coming! -

ReplyAs I said during my comments at Wednesday night's meeting, these structures look to me like trailers, or boxcars. They are boxes, hardly a design inspired by nature. The interpretive center has 3 sides of glass, effectively separating anyone inside from the elements so vital to enjoying the site: the wind, the spray, the scents of the beach and the bluffs. One might as well sit inside a parked car and gaze at the lake - the experience would be the same. I fear birds will fly into the large windows, as anyone with a picture window knows. I feel strongly that the interpretive center should be a 3 season structure, providing shelter but not separation from the elements. And at the base of a steep bluff, why resist a vaulted ceiling structure, which provides natural relief from the heat when the weather is hot. Rosewood is a gem, and we should improve it. But adding trailers, even glass ones, is not the answer.

ReplyToday's NYTimes reported that the Brevard County Public Library (in east-central Florida) has "pulled copies of the books from its shelves after officials decided they were not suitable for public circulation." According to our own Highland Park Public Library librarians, as of today there are 65 people on the wait-list for book 1, 24 people on the wait-list for book 2, and 26 people on the wait-list for book 3. And, for the record, our HP library owns 16 copies of the first volume, 5 of the second, and 3 of the third.
Censorship be damned. Shame on Brevard County. -

ReplyLet the record show: Patch readers are sending me secret little emails admitting to where they are in the process of reading the trilogy. I'm 150 pages away from finishing and have to take a break to pick up my new prescription reading glasses. Even through the blur of tired, aging eyes I'm having trouble putting these books down. And what about the movie? Surely there's a group willing to sit around drinking lattes and discussing the merits of the casting, the filming, the depiction of that weird Cornucopia...

Sweet Reader- You think I haven't seen enough episodes of "Say Yes to the Dress" to realize the full scope of human drama that show encompasses? The bitchy bridesmaid posses, the unwelcome groom, the overbearing mother, the sainted-because-she's-dead mother, the compulsively indecisive bride, the I-want-to-look-like-a-slut bride, the plus-size bride... this show is BRILLIANT. I initially favored Kleinfelds, but lately I've been won over by Lori and Monte in Atlanta. I turn it off when it features the nuts in Beverly Hills. Okay. Maybe I've seen more than 3 episodes.

Glenn- You have attacked Betsy and me personally rather than commenting substantively on the issues we address, albeit humorously, in our column. There are two points to the article. First, that most people latch onto the gaffes with gusto. And second, that often those gaffes are revelatory. For the record, Betsy and I were employed in a male dominated industry (talk radio) for almost a decade. We were fired by the same white man who fired WGN radio personalities Kathy and Judy, and who was depicted in the Howard Stern movie as a character named Pig Vomit. We are both currently employed, which is why you were able to read our column. Our resumes are impressive and include Ivy League diplomas, graduate school, and extensive service on behalf of the blind and visually impaired. Your condescending dismissal of our value in the work place reflects poorly on you. It also reminds us of another man who is running for public office....
