Northbrook Issues Cease and Desist Over Walmart Mailer

A recent mailer promoting Walmart sent to Northbrook resident included the village's logo, which some people thought was Northbrook's endorsement of the development.

A Walmart informational mailer recently sent out to Northbrook residents included the village's logo on it, prompting some people to wonder whether it was meant to look like a village endorsement.

During Wednesday's Plan Commission public input meeting, Northbrook's Village Attorney, Steve Elrod, said he has demanded Walmart immediately cease and desist from production and distribution of that mailer.

"It does breed confusion and I assure the Plan Commission and the members of public that the Village of Northbrook is not responsible nor does the Village of Northbrook endorse this particular piece of literature," Elrod said.

Harold Francke, the attorney representing the 1000 Skokie Blvd. property owner, Skodun LLC, publically apologized for the mailer after Elrod's remarks.

"I will tell you quite honestly that many, many eyes on the [Walmart] side looked at that mailer many times and nobody saw what obviously certain other residents did see," Francke said.

"We understand that people were confused by it and apologize," he added. "It will not appear elsewhere.
